AHHHHH! That's the blog tonight, because that's how I feel. No museums, no sightseeing, and no crowds.  Today we slept till 11 Florance time and then strolled on over to a cafe, had a few espresso's and went to the market. got tons of cheese and cured meats and olive oil and wine and...well you get the idea. Then we sat on the balcony and proceeded to stuff ourselves like a couple of turkey's the day before Thanksgiving. Oh and it fells GREAT!!!! So here our some pictures of our glutinous meal.

Dining in Roma

Lardo with lemon
Parla Italiano? Si Si Si!  I stared asking myself what is so great about Italian food. So far it has been good but nothing to write home about. Well while wandering the streets of Rome we stumbled into a neighborhood where tourism ended and Italy began. Nobody and I mean nobody spoke good English.  The handful of words I knew in Italian meant the difference between having a wonderful meal and being told to get lost in a way I would not understand.  The places we went the menus were in Italian and nothing but Italian.  Spotting a few words here and there gave me a gist of what it was, but ultimately it came down to trusting the food...the food did not disappoint! Inny meeny miney moe-ing the menu lead incredible dishes to me with ingredients I would have not though to be good. Spaghetti with canned tuna (not Starkist) and tomato sauce was a dish with such simple flavors but sooo good. And I don't like canned tuna, but this did not have any of the negative qualities of canned tuna we would think of. Trust me it was good.  I am sure most people have had buffalo mozzarella, but believe me when I tell you NOT LIKE THIS. The texture was out of this world, and the flavor had a new dimension to it. I could not tell you what.  You think New Orleans has a good seafood pasta, sorry but we had a lovely spaghetti with mussels, clams, and calamari that would blow any New Orleans restaurant out the swamp. Then the desserts. Oh my, I have had tiramisu, panna cotta, and some wonderful chocolate lava cake type thing with vanilla cream that was o me o my.  Then the waiter (all of which given our language handicap were extremely nice) brought over to us this wonderful port wine that had a lovely balance of cherries and vanilla. We need to ship some of this stuff back. All in all the food and the service has (now that we know where to look) been far greater than we ever expected. Bon appetit!

I had the Spaghetti Con Tonno Alla Romana. She had the Fettine Alla Romana

A real antipasta plate oooooh

Wine Gone, Tiramisu gone
Bad picture but this is the best port wind I have ever had and the waiter just left us the bottle. WE DIDN'T ORDER IT.

Ancient Ruins and more

Also something very special happened as well. Keep reading to find out.

                               Gladiator Gerald!!!

ummm really!!!! I am the only person with a dress on.

Even the Ancient Romans loved the Saints. Take that Goodell!!!

  huge toe
I had no clue in about 3 hours I would be engaged!!!

He had the ring in his pocket the entire time.

Well, honey, this book says this thing is a ancient ruin. DUH

This was the most wonderful meal period. 2mins later I was engaged and the waiters kissed me and the Canadians kissed me.

The Vatican and Patheon

St. Peters Basilica its huge

 St. Peters Basilica/Popes Altar
 Dome of the Basilica
 Pantheon....I swear it looked fake.
Trevi Fountain...kinda thought it was overated!!!
Oldest Ancient Egyptian statue in Piazza Navonna

What a day!!! The Vatican was one of the most amazing sites I have ever seen. Gerald's 2nd cousin is a tour guide in Rome and gave us a VIP tour of the Vatican and St. Peters Basilica. The art, silk tapestries, Raphael and Michelangelo. AHHHH it was so overwhelming. The Egyptian marble on the columns and mosaics were out of this world. I can't even describe it. Gerald just said " It left us speechless". Then we saw the Patheon and every hair on my body stood up. No picture can do it justice you just have to see it yourself.  The Trevi Fountain was so crowded we decided to opt for gelato... hazelnut and caramel. Our feet hurt and  the funniest thing so far is all restaurant's play American music and not current. Boyz 2 Men, Journey, Michael Jackson and my favorite Rick Astley. Yes people Rick Astley. I was laughing sooooooo hard!!  So to sum up the day was awe ispiriring but exausting and we hit the hay early tonight, but not before planning our next"Walking amongst the ancient Romans" adventure. Tomorrow the Fourm and the Colosseum. Tune in next time.

We have arrived!!!

This is our view of Rome at A View of Rome Bed and Breakfast...certainly lives up to it's name.

Ciao everybody!!  Jet lag has set in and we are recovering nicely. It was a 9 1/2 hour flight from Atlanta to Rome, lots of movie options, but we only slept for two hours. Upon our arrival there was a wave of stale cigarette smoke filling the gate...lovely. The ride to our hotel can be described as beautiful and nerve racking.  With a back drop of an ancient civilization came a flood of Volvos, Fiats, and Vespas swimming up the road like a school of salmon upstream to spawn. Although the traffic was horrific there was a gentle calm that possessed the drivers. No swearing or excessive horn blowing, just a occasional beep and a driver sighing "Mamma Mia". Our B&B is absolutely amazing with a wonderful host. We have tried to speak Italian but well then they speak back to us in English. WOMP WOMP!!!
